Student Experiences: "Arriving to the USA!"

Hello Everyone, My name is Firas and I am a Syrian student studying in West Virginia, USA.

I would like to tell you little bit about why I chose to study in the United State first. First of all, before I came to the U.S. to study, I have read a lot about different universities, the education system, the people, the American culture, and the life. I also read what other people had to say based on their experiences.

However, my decision about coming here to the USA as an international student was not only based on what I read or what the other people experienced in this country. My decision was mostly based on my desire of getting a good education in a good university, improving my English. While doing all of this I wanted to live in the country of Uncle Sam for a while and get a short but great life experience.

Snowing in New York City...

It was snowing when I first arrived to New York City! I was able to communicate with people using my not so strong English at that time. It wasn't really that difficult to explain people where I needed to go or what I needed. I had to make my way to West Virginia since my university is located there, so I tried to communicate with people by asking questions... I was tired, too. I needed an hotel that wasn't too expensive and I also needed to find out how I could travel to West Virginia from New York City.

Again, It was snowing outside and I did not know what I should do. I had many bags with me. I ran into a man and asked him if there was a way to get to my State without having to take an airplane. He told me that I could take the bus and told me where I needed to go to do so.. So I went to the Greyhound Bus Station in the center of New York City.

I had to take a shuttle bus from the airport to get to the Greyhound Bus Station in New York City. It wasn't a long ride... It took only little bit more than 30 minutes. Once I arrived at the bus station, I continued to ask for help and directions. People were helpful!

Don't be shy! Ask for help!

My advice to the new international students in USA is that you should ask for help when needed. Don't be shy! Just ask the people around you if you need to get directions or need more information on where to go or where to stay. You will find someone who will help. Especially at the airports, bus stations, train stations you will see many information desks or help desks.

Thank you and good luck with your studies in USA.
